Monika: Week 1 - Identifying the culprits

Last night I went out with friends to have dinner and to see Cowboy Mouth in concert in Covington. We ate dinner at Riverside Korean where I ordered my favorite, Dolsot Bim Bap, which consists of rice, veggies, tofu and an egg all served in a stone bowl. After dinner we walked down to Madison Theatre for the show. Our first stop inside was the bar where I ordered my first drink. After the opening act, and while waiting for Cowboy Mouth to start, I pulled out my BlackBerry to check messages. Sipping my second drink, I read through my mobile Twitter feed, which was full of encouraging tweets from the Cincy Losers. Did seeing those tweets make me feel a teeny bit guilty for the excess of Dolsot and drinks? Of course. Did I put down my drink and exchange it for water? No.

This morning I weighed myself for the blog and discovered that my weight hadn’t budged an ounce. Even while standing on the scale half-asleep at 6am, I don’t want to admit that my social life is the biggest culprit in my struggles with weight. I know it’s a no-brainer that I’m not going to lose weight if I’m constantly eating restaurant food and drinking cocktails. I don’t believe in total deprivation, but with hard numbers (164.5) staring me in the face it clearly is time for me to be honest and face facts: if I’m serious about weight loss and fitness, I need to reassess priorities and do a better job of balancing going out with being healthy.

Most importantly, I have to cut back on the cocktails. Second, I need to make a commitment to working out at least twice a week and going out less. For someone like me who lives to be the life of the party this is going to be very hard to do, and I’m counting on the support of the Cincy Losers to be successful.

This weekend Aaron (the boyfriend) and I are camping with a group of friends. I have high hopes that all the hiking, swimming and horseback riding that we’ll do will kick-start me in the right direction. I also found a brilliant website that sends daily emails of healthy foods, recipes and gives WW Points values for foods. I’m going to the store on Monday to buy they (she?) recommend.

You can do it! This weekend will be a great kick-start with all that activity.

And just identifying the culprit has you on the right track!

I had a tiny glass of wine last night-- moderation is the key. I might have another glass of wine later this weekend, but I'm not drinking NEARLY as much as I used to, and it helps. That was one of my "keys" the last time I did this.

I LOVE Hungry Girl! Of course, I've been getting their emails for 6 months. The trick, apparently, is to read them. I also bought the Hungry Girl cookbook, which is a lot of fun.

I'm still having a glass of wine every night. I have cut out beer completely though, since I prefer fancy beers instead of "light" beers. Now when we're out, I tend to alternate my glass of wine with a glass of water. Sometimes its at the same time - a sip of water, then a sip of wine. Whichever way I manage it, I tend to drink less alcohol.

This has always worked for me in the past. Of course, I just instigated it this week, so we'll see if it works again.

That gal in the left most pic with you has to cut back on her cocktails too (and she's a bit of a culprit herself)! I'm with ya redkat :) I need to lose 15 lbs by Sept 13 - my friend's wedding... I know they say body wraps won't help lose weight, but apparently do make you look more toned... have you tried them yet? Belterra's spa does them and I want to be a human guinea pig and try a couple... thinking maybe I can at least look like I've lost the weight on the 13th, even if I am still working toward the real weight loss...

That hungry-girl site sounds like exactly what I need. I am going to check it out. I love the emails. Would be good for keeping me on track as well.

With regards to drinking, I've switched to liquor. It seems lower in callories. This weekend we'll be camping too and my drink of choice will be absolute (69 cals) and diet seven up (0 cals).

My regular beer - Stella Artois has 154 calories so by switching I can drink more..... with less guilt.

oy, camping..... I love to hike, be outdoors all day long, and to be active, but I like to sleep on 1000 thread count sheets at night. I'm a wife and mother to two BOYS. Needless to say, they hate me for anti-camping ways. Hey, I have no problem with a 13 mile hike up hill, but lets go to the Hilton for a proper shower and dinner that night. ha!

I hear ya on the cocktail thing, too. Champagne is only 78 calories for 4 ounces....for those that only drink 4 ounces. ...that counts me out. All in all, not insanely high in calories.

Also try It's a great way to find calories/fat, even restaurant foods, quick.
